HAVING BEEN on my travels a bit this year it is already time to admit again that there is no place like home. But it’s always interesting and informative to reflect on ideas and philosophies in different sailing countries, writes YL racing editor Andi Robertson.

I’m sure anyone who reads this column regularly will be tired of my passion for French sailing and in particular the way businesses get behind projects and support them at all levels. And, just back from Copa del Rey, the Mediterranean showcase regatta, even though the Spanish economy is just in recovery mode, there is still sponsorship to be had in the Med.

And why does it not work on a bigger, wider scale here? There are two fundamental, different aspects which make a difference in either country. Sailing is perceived to be an egalitarian, widely practised sport in most parts of coastal France and in Spain it still enjoys Royal participation. That is not just support, but participation.
